Allison's Wonderland
Hey, look! Potatoes with Cousin Tim!!!
My name is Allison. Welcome to my Wonderland: my very own organic farming adventure, online. Starting with a tiny backyard garden 8 summers ago, Allison's Wonderland Farm is a project that has blossomed into a 1 1/2 acre plot, along with church, school, and home gardens aimed at growing sustainable food and helping others understand where their meals come from in the process. The effort has been both humbling and rewarding -- I've had a million things to learn along the way too, but there has been no greater privilege than to see others enjoy the delicious results. It is my way of expressing my commitment to feeding people good, tasty, healthy food that also respects the planet.
And oh yeah, it's been fun too!
There's the Christmas-in-July feeling of digging up a big pile of potatoes that from the surface looks barely present. There's the earthy joy of mud between my toes when I'm a bit too enthusiastic for my worn-out bumblebee boots to keep up. And there's the proud feeling of watching a seedling burst into life, especially where a bouquet of color signals the ripening of produce on the vine. (Just keep those sneaky rabbits and startled turkeys that fly at my face away!)
I am now 28 years old, living in the very near suburbs of Chicago, IL. My heart and soul, however, reside in the earth's soil and in the countryside of Northern Illinois that has made my Wonderland possible. Every summer I lose my mind just a little more than the last fending off flood, drought, stinkbug and aphid and discovering how to deal with each new challenge of being a novice farmer. But I wouldn't have it any other way...
