"I am certain nothing will grow!" ~Me to Farmer Pam the weekend after the first planting
The Bay Family is one of the greatest families I have ever met. They very graciously allowed me to use some of their land in Harvard, Illinois this summer. Adventures in Farmland has been quite the endeavor. Summer 2010 is quite certainly a learning year. Just to get the land turned took 4 weeks, a Bobcat, a tractor, two rototillers, my Cousin Tim, and whole lot of shovel power. It has not been easy, nor did I truly believe anything would grow in soil unlike any I experience where I live. But there are plants growing and if all goes well, I will be able to feed my family and many other families well into the fall. As hard as it has been, as beaten as it has made me feel, when I am there, there is no other place I'd rather be (and did I mention the neighbors have chickens?!). Nothing else is all that important when I am in the quiet countryside tending to my plants. And yes, I know how strange that makes me sound!
